NEWS RELEASE

Environmental Champion running for Spokane City Council

Kitty Klitzke, a Spokane native with a record of military service and community achievements, is announcing her run for the open Northwest Council District 3 seat in the 2023 election.

Klitzke was a top finalist for appointment to the City Council when former Councilman Steve Salvatori announced early retirement in 2014.

Klitzke is well known for her work protecting and improving neighborhoods, cleaning up the Spokane River, improving streets for walkers, drivers, cyclists and transit riders to make our transportation system work for everyone. She served as chair of the City of Spokane’s Community Assembly Pedestrian, Transportation and Traffic Committee, the Spokane Regional Transportation Advisory Committee and the Spokane Regional Food Policy Council. Klitzke led Complete Streets Spokane, a successful citizens Campaign for a Complete Streets ordinance to fix the streets, protect cyclists and pedestrians, and helped lead the successful “Yes for Buses” campaign in 2016, which was instrumental in passing Proposition One, funding millions for new STA buses and the Central City Line.

“I am deeply committed to my hometown and excited to engage with neighbors in Northwest Spokane throughout my campaign.” Klitzke said. “As a City Council Member, I look forward to harnessing our community’s growth to build responsibly, reduce traffic, and protect the environment. I have two decades of experience working with neighborhoods, connecting them to elected leaders, governmental and businesses interests, and diverse coalitions to create a safer, healthier and more sustainable community—a community where our children will feel safe raising their own families.”

Klitzke lives in the West Central neighborhood, a fourth generation Spokanite, a graduate of Rogers High School and served eight years as a medic in the Army Reserve. She was the Program Outreach Director for the Lands Council and was the Eastern Washington Program Director for Futurewise, a Statewide Livable Community Non-Profit organization which helps protect farmland and natural resources. A parent of an elementary student, Klitzke served as Parent Teacher Group chair of Spokane’s Public Language Immersion School.

“For years our community has faced unresolved challenges such as affordable housing, mounting traffic, and issues that are unique to each neighborhood. I have the experience, and expertise to tackle these tough issues and am ready to hit the ground running as District 3’s next representative,” Klitzke said.
